Tasting Notes: Although Lodi is in California's Central Valley, its climate is more Mediterranean than the hot, dry semi-arid climate you might expect. This is thanks to the many rivers which run through the AVA and the creeks, estuaries and bays into which they flow. Merlot, an early budding grape, does well here in the reliable warmth. This wine is dense garnet in color. It has a layered aroma of black currant, garrigue, plum, and vanilla. On the palate, good complexity, with black currant, blackberry, espresso with cream, and oregano notes. It has good structure: tannins present but smooth, plush mouth feel but not jammy. Tasting Notes: The sunny weather in April has reinspired my love for chardonnay and this one from Noble Vines does not disappoint. The straw color displays its 5-6 months of time in French and American oak barrels. Grown in a cooler climate within the Monterey region of California, this wine brings vanilla, lychee, and bright citrus to the nose. Creamy and complex flavors starting with vanilla, pineapple, and peach followed by flower blossom, marshmallow and melon to finish. Long finish balanced with slight minerality, this wine has it all. Tasting Notes: As a West Highlander, this Highland Whisky from Orkney does not disappoint. Nose: Gentle, but quite sweet and fruity with touches of apricot, granulated sugar, orange peels, marmalade and a touch of tobacco. Just a tinge of fennel in the background. The smoke is almost non-existent. Taste: More recognisable as Highland Park now. Subtle, yet refreshing smoke. Green-ish in a way. A hint of white pepper, cereals, oak spices and oranges, as well as a more herbacious side. Mouthfeel is on the thinner side. Finish: Medium length with spicy oak, some ginger and a touch of honey. Soft fruits too.
