Rivera Cappellaccio Agliancio 2017
Italy
Tasting Notes: One of the most well-known Italian wine makers, Rivera Winery was established in the 1940s by the de Corato family and since has been a cornerstone of Puglia's vinicultural renaissance. The Aglianico grape is considered to be among Sangiovese and Nebbiolo to be one of the big three grapes greatest to Italian varietals, sometimes referred to as the "Barolo of the South" due to its ability to produce complex fine wines like Barolo. However, don't let its comparison to Barolo overshadow this big grape! Rivera's Aglianico is deep ruby in colour, with fruit notes of black cherries, plums, and dried figs. Following with tobacco, leather, and black pepper spice. With the 14 months spent in French oak, the tannins are big but not too aggressive along with the acidity that lingers on the palette. It is an incredible wine to drink on its own in a large wine glass and alongside charcuterie with bold meats, aged cheddars, and/or gamey meats such as lamb. Incredible wine for the price, drink now or age until 2027.
